CEAMSA continues to advance in the European CIRCALGAE project to valorise algae waste
CEAMSA continues to make progress in the European CIRCALGAE project, an initiative funded by the Horizon Europe programme aimed at transforming algae waste into new high value-added ingredients for food, cosmetic and other industrial applications.
The project, which brings together a consortium of 21 partners from across Europe, including companies, technology centres and universities, seeks to promote the development of sustainable algae-based biorefineries, contributing to a more circular and resource-efficient economy.
Project progress
After several months of implementation, CIRCALGAE continues to advance in the development of innovative solutions for the valorisation of algae by-products, addressing key challenges such as:
- Optimising microalgae and macroalgae cultivation systems
- Designing biorefinery processes for the production of new ingredients
- Developing formulations with enhanced functional and nutritional properties
- Generating scientific and technical knowledge to drive new industrial applications
CEAMSA’s role
Within the project, CEAMSA plays a key role as a specialist in hydrocolloids and functional ingredients, focusing its activities on:
- The valorisation of algae by-products into ingredients for food and cosmetic applications
- The development of new applications in matrices such as meat products, bakery and emulsion systems
- Participation in pilot-scale trials to validate the performance of these ingredients under industrial conditions
- Contributing to the definition of the functional characteristics required for market introduction
In addition, CEAMSA is working on identifying new ways to utilise waste streams and developing formulations that create synergies with its current hydrocolloid portfolio.
Impact and vision
CIRCALGAE represents an important step towards consolidating more sustainable production models within the ingredients industry, promoting the full valorisation of marine resources and reducing waste.
For CEAMSA, this project reinforces its positioning as a key player in the transition towards a circular bioeconomy, driven by innovation, sustainability and the development of high value-added natural solutions.
