A static in vitro study published on Food Ingredients First shows that CEAMFIBRE®, CEAMSA‘s partially soluble citrus fibre, acts on the gut microbiota and promotes a feeling of satiety.
CEAMSA has published a new technical article on Food Ingredients First presenting the results of a static in vitro study designed to evaluate whether CEAMFIBRE® 7200 — a citrus fibre with 90% total dietary fibre, of which 45% is soluble — has prebiotic and satiating properties.
The study, conducted using static in vitro colonic fermentation models and enteroendocrine cell assays, revealed three key findings:
- Effect on colonic microbiota: CEAMFIBRE® 7200 supported the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and reduced the presence of potentially harmful Enterobacteria.
- Increased short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production: a 28% rise in total SCFA output was recorded, driven mainly by butyric and propionic acid — metabolites associated with gut protection, inflammation regulation and improvement of the intestinal barrier.
- Satiety effect: colonic digests containing CEAMFIBRE® 7200 increased the gene expression of CCK and PYY, two biomarkers directly linked to the feeling of fullness.
These results suggest that CEAMFIBRE® 7200 goes well beyond its recognised multifunctionality as a texturising ingredient, establishing itself as a fibre with real functional potential for gut wellbeing — an attribute increasingly sought after by both consumers and the food industry.
